Unsure About Getting PrEP for Women?
The C3 Cares Team wants you to know the medical facts about getting the PrEP for women.
PrEP, short for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, entails taking a once-daily medication to prevent HIV transmission. When taken regularly, PrEP slashes the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99% among HIV-negative individuals. Combining PrEP with condoms and other safe-sex practices can further diminish the risk.
Determining whether PrEP is right for you starts with asking your healthcare provider. Typically, PrEP is recommended for HIV-negative individuals who:
- Engage in sexual activity with multiple or anonymous partners
- Have irregular or no condom usage
- Identify as male and have sexual relations with other males
- Use injection drugs or substances that alter mood, like alcohol, methamphetamines, cocaine, or ecstasy
- Exchange sex for money, drugs, housing, etc.
- Have a partner living with HIV or whose HIV status is unknown
PrEP is generally safe to take alongside birth control, hormone therapy, or during breastfeeding. However, it's always wise to discuss this with your doctor. Most individuals report no adverse effects while on PrEP.
Absolutely! PrEP should be taken daily, even during menstruation.
Not at all. In reality, women comprise 20% of new HIV diagnoses. HIV transmission isn't confined to any specific gender, sexual orientation, or lifestyle. Everyone can potentially encounter HIV, underscoring the importance of protective measures.
